Most of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was incorporated into the Russian Empire. Lithuania under the Tsars Initially, the dissolution of the Grand Duchy did not much alter Lithuania’s cultural and social life. Under Tsar Paul I (R. 1796–1801) and the relatively liberal Alexander I (R. 1801–1825), the Lithuanian nobility preserved its power and influence. More significant changes occurred in southwestern Lithuania, the region on the left bank of the Nemunas River, which included about a fifth of the ethnic Lithuanian population and had passed under Prussian rule (1795–1807) following the final partition of the Commonwealth.

Despite these difficulties, Lithuania achieved considerable gains in farm productivity. After the abolition of the old manorial system, medium-size and small farms predominated; in 1930, they made up an estimated 78 percent of all farms. During the 1930s, pork and dairy products, especially high-grade butter, accounted for the majority of Lithuania’s exports. Despite these gains in productivity, Lithuanian agriculture suffered structural weaknesses. Many peasants remained indebted, and farm failures were frequent.
