I am not arguing that Deleuzian becoming is identical to Bergsonian duration, but merely that Deleuze‟s construction of becoming was heavily influenced by Bergsonian duration, specifically in what concerns becomings, or sensory becoming. For example, becoming does not consist of interpenetrating states of consciousness for Deleuze, but it reflects the continuous heterogeneity implicated in the virtual multiplicity of duration. Becoming is itself a multiplicity, masking a multiplicity of other becomings as they become other while they continue to be what they are.
The pluralism of becomings is only one piece of the ontological puzzle of becoming. The concept of becoming that bears the mark of Bergsonian duration, sensory becoming, replaces the traditional notion of substance as internal change. ”49 Becoming differentiates itself according to the same nonnumerical temporal logic of duration, changing in kind as it is divided.
